伊索寓言英語故事1:捆木柴

A Husbandman who had a quarrelsome family ,after having tried in vain to reconcile them bywords ,thought he might more readily prevail by an example he called his sons and bidthem lay a bundle of sticks before him ,having tied them into a fagot, he told the lads,one after the other ,to take it up and break it all tied ,but tried in vain untying thefagot ,he gave them the sticks to break one by one they did with the GREatest ease said the father:"Thus you ,my sons ,as long as you remain united ,are a match for all youenemies ;but differ and separate ,and you are undone."

Union is strength.

一個農夫,家庭不和睦,用言語勸告大家和好,總是無效,最後他想,用實際例子可能容易說服他們。於是他把兒子都叫來,吩咐他們抱一捆火柴放在他的面前。他把火柴捆成一捆,接著叫這些孩子挨次拿起來折斷它,一個個都試過了,但都沒有折斷,接著他解了捆,一根一根地給他們折,他們都輕而易舉地折斷了。這時父親說:"孩子們,只要我們團結一致,你們就能對付一切敵人;但是如果意見不合,各自東西,那麼你們一定要失敗。"

A Shepherd-boy, who tended his flock not far from a village, used to amuse himself at timesin crying out"wolf !wolf!"Twice or thrice his trick succeeded whole village came running outto his assistance when all the return they got was to be laughed at for their pains last oneday the wolf came indeed boy cried out in earnest. But his neighbors, supposing him to beat his old sport, paid no heed to his cries, and the wolf devoured the sheep. So the boylearned, when it was too late, that liars are not believed even when they tell the truth.

一個放羊的孩子在離村子不遠的地方放羊。他為了開心尋樂常喊:"狼來了!狼來了!"他的惡作劇有兩三次達到了目的。全村的人都跑來幫忙,而他們所得到的回報卻是一頓嘲笑,白費了心力。最後,有一天狼真的來了。這個孩子認真地大喊起來。但是他的鄰人們卻以為他又在耍把戲,誰都不理會他的喊叫,於是狼把羊吃了。因此這牧童得到了教訓:愛說謊的人,甚至在他說真話的時候,也沒人相信他,但是他知道得太晚了。
