what college education means to me.

the title of my speech is “what college education means to me” reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, i come to realize how much it has shaped me.

for me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.

with great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. by dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, i’ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. how can i best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? my one year’s experience as a part-time english teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, i have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, i feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that i ’m on the right way.

and more importantly, college education has set up not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations. by interacting with friends of common beliefs, i’ve acquired skills of relating to other people.

now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,i’m still not in the position to tell what’s waiting ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardent companions of sailing in the sea of society, i’m ready to be a great sea-explorer.

thank you.

My college,my life

College life is colorful, but also need us to grasp and deep experience. Someone said: "ordinary college students have the same ordinary, but not the ordinary university but has its own brilliant." But, you can choose to ordinary, but not can choose mediocrity; If you can't believe that ordinary. So, how can we make our own university life worthwhile meaningful, how to advocate their university life? I just talk about personal time view.

first is to establish goals and plans, farther g

aze. The ancients have "volunteers," save lofty when MAO zedong also has "custom long appropriate looking quantity". No goal will not have the efforts to advance direction, and with no power at all. Project goals, can divide again for immediate and long-term. Such as the recent I will read as many books as this month I should know what knowledge, holiday what practice plan to wait. For the long-term such as: before graduation of diploma, get relationships should be much, how should practice ability to the degree, etc. Moreover, the realization of the goal is a little wrath coherent process meter to realize. If one day, to remember five words can be written to many test. But, this requires persistence and perseverance.

second, is to put far vision, it is to point to not be temporary mood and mood that what will be done to drag, addiction, it must be great business event grasps, small relax. Such as online gaming, don't be such by the goal of satisfying some have been addicted, what does not know, temporarily meet the bigger behind the emptiness. Believe we all have this experience.

the first three is to establish employment crisis. We always blame myself himself is not strong, control force without aspirant power. What does not know is own consciousness not awake. Someone will say: "love is study power" or "disadvantaged study power", etc. Actually, from direct sense, employment crisis is also should be our progress power. I often think of yourself after graduation actually do? The diploma, just college; Relations, believe in sit nothing most of the relationship. So, we the only way out is to have what ability. And this, then ask yourself: what you learned, you master? The problem now is not what we do not know to learn, but we don't want to learn.

fourth, is to learn knowledge and capacity development simultaneously. Before is heavy knowledge and light ability, but it's different now, just contrary, because social influence, diploma requirements of decline, so now properly many college students run outside looking for part-time job. If they are not affect the premise of learning, that didn't go as saying, instead should advocate. But some of them not, for a side dish, the waiter work at leave cleans, nor the arching over star. I side with this phenomenon. Now, there was such a dislocation thought, is that the authorities enterprise staff on-the-job, are using spare time "charging", and the college students in school but run into social part-time. I think this should be rectified the zeitgeist, position.

Well, my speech today is so far. Finally, the only one: "way streched endless ahead,

we will from head to foot." Yes, gave I, too, and everybody said.

Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. My topic today is “The pursuit of happiness” and am I going to start with a definition? NO! That is not how I am going to approach this. After knowing the topic, I can imagine students cutting directly into the definiton of happiness, sharing their little happy stories, setting criteria for happiness and using puns to show what happiness consists of. But that is not where I am going.

To be honest, there is actually not much to talk about happiness and there is no need to hold an open discussion about it, because the sense of happiness is a mere personal and private concept. We define our own happiness. Some people like peace and nature, so they prefer to live tranquilly in the countryside; some people are drawn into arts and literature, so they become wild and let imagination take their wheels; while some others are simply fancy about the betterment of life, in other words, to make big money, so they work their asses off to get to the top of the pyramid, like me. Am I happy? Yes. Are they happy? Of course. People have different beliefs, different targets and they are simply different beings and they deserve the rights to pursue their own happiness.

However, there is a popular set-pattern catching on recently, claiming to be the happiest way of living and it goes like, “Enter a key school! Then a pretigious university! Get a decent job! Large houses! Stunning spouse! Children! And finally rest in peace with four generation crying and remembering you besides your coffin.” And the pattern passes on to the next generation. There are actually a lot more set-patterns and stereotypes in our lives: “Boys go for science; girls are for arts.” “English major? You’ve gotta learn a double degree. Economy will be the best for boys.” “Don’t ever listen to Lady Gaga, that’s for women and gays.” And whenever I want to fight against those stereotypes, the responses will all be like, “That’s how it works in China! Be a man! You are too naive [Sigh], you’ve gotta learn the systems, boy.” The seemingly-established patterns are dangerous. They make us lose our ability to think and analyse, or become too realistic to think: if we make one step out of the set-circle, we will be outcasted and no longer experience happiness. But that is not true. I became an art student in a class of only 5 boys; I broke the first pattern. I didn’t apply for the economy degree, because I hate math; I broke the second pattern. I am sure there will be many more patterns for me to break, but I am not afraid; a little excited actually. If I followed any of those patterns, I swear, I couldn’t be happy like I am now.

I don’t want to live like a bee flying in circles: “Get the honey! Get back to the hive and get ready to die!” No. Even though I can’t make big money in the future, I still want things to be in my way, not from the pattern. I want to live my life, not a life. I can only be happy if I can be true to myself.

Thank you.

Good afternoon, everyone,The topic of my speech today is “Being a Good Listener”. Good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship. Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friends hip is likely to be formed. What I want to stress is that each of us should listen to others. Show your respect and n ever stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinio ns even though you don't like them. In a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other. Thank you for your listening!

get out of "jail"

oh, the joy! the absolute joy! archie couldn’t remember a recent moment when he had felt so happy. if he could sing, he would have sung. if he could dance, he would have danced. if he could have shouted to the world, he would have shouted to the world, “i’m free, i’m free!”

he had been in “jail” for the last week. a mental jail, to be sure, but it still felt like jail. about six weeks ago, he had received his almost annual jury summons. printed on the outside of the white envelope, in bright red letters, was: official jury summons enclosed—registration required within 5 days. a friend of his had been throwing away such summonses for at least 20 years. archie couldn’t do that—he felt that his luck was so bad that if he tried it, his summons would be the one with the concealed microchip that recorded him throwing the envelope in the trash. then he really would be in jail. so, he dutifully filled out the form and waited until his starting date—november 5, a monday. for that week, he would be “on call” for “no more than five days.”

as instructed, he dialed the 800-srv-jury number on the saturday preceding november 5. he tapped in his pin and jury group number. he listened, and sighed with relief; the recording had told him to call again monday after 5 p.m. so, one day out of five was gone!

on monday and tuesday, archie got the same recording. he had now escaped jury duty for three days, monday through wednesday. only two days to go.

wednesday afternoon, his friend gil called, asking archie if he wanted to play golf the next morning. archie said he was on jury duty that week. gil said, “well, no problem! it’s already wednesday. you’ve made it! there’s no way that they’re going to call you to jury duty this late in the week.” archie couldn’t believe that gil had said that. archie knocked several times on his wooden bookcase, saying that he hoped that gil was right.

at 5:05 that evening, still worried that gil had jinxed him, archie dialed the 800 number. sure enough, the recording told him to call back thursday between noon and 12:30, instead of the usual 5 p.m. damn that gil, archie thought.

thursday, he anxiously called at 12:28. the recording told him that his jury service was finished! all he had to do was mail in the affidavit that had come in the white envelope. archie put the affidavit into an envelope, put a 41-cent first class stamp on the envelope, and drove to the post office. whistling as he dropped the envelope into the mailbox, he happily washed his hands once again of the “privilege” of doing jury service.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to begin with a story.

There was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.

Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.

All these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources.

Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because they know it still belongs to them.

This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.

The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer.

And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Dian Fossey be- cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.

And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

Thank you very much.

Thanks, contestant# topic for your impromptu speech is:Which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal experience? Answer: Thank you. I remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,"From now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books."And I do learn a lot from books: I know the geometry of Euclid, logic of

Aristotle, fable of Aesop known to children around the world. Well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, I do realize that personal experience through practice means more to me. As we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. As we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and I think this is why we are here today. We want to earn our personal experience through practicing our oral English, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. And I think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. Never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. And I think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams. Even if we know some rules, some regulations, or experiences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world. Instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. Thank you very much. Contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. Could you explain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?

Answer: Thank you for your question. And I think the key issue is the differences between our awareness. Fot example, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. And I think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that "I’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper." We’re not go to all those scenic spots to estroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the Mother Nature giving us so much things. Thank you very much.

Contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in China, do you think books will become less and less important?

Answer: Well, I think, maybe, umm, I don’t think that all those echnologies can replace the importance of books. We’re in our modern village where so many new industries—IT industries, tourism ndustries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but I think the true value, the essence of our village remains the is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn. Thank you very much.

I’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. You mention that the UN has declated the year 20xx, I think it was, "The Year of Ecotourism." Do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? Answer: And I think one of my teachers said to me, when I prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to omething like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to bear something in our hearts. Follow our hearts, our environment can be k you very much.

Cutting through complexity to find a solution runs through four predictable stages: determine a goal, find the highest-leverage approach, discover the ideal technology for that approach, and in the meantime, make the smartest application of the technology that you already have — whether it’s something sophisticated, like a drug, or something simpler, like a bednet.

The AIDS epidemic offers an example. The broad goal, of course, is to end the disease. The highest-leverage approach is prevention. The ideal technology would be a vaccine that gives lifetime immunity with a single dose. So governments, drug companies, and foundations fund vaccine research. But their work is likely to take more than a decade, so in the meantime, we have to work with what we have in hand – and the best prevention approach we have now is getting people to avoid risky behavior.

Pursuing that goal starts the four-step cycle again. This is the pattern. The crucial thing is to never stop thinking and working – and never do what we did with malaria and tuberculosis in the 20th century – which is to surrender to complexity and quit.

The final step – after seeing the problem and finding an approach – is to measure the impact of your work and share your successes and failures so that others learn from your efforts.

You have to have the statistics, of course. You have to be able to show that a program is vaccinating millions more children. You have to be able to show a decline in the number of children dying from these diseases. This is essential not just to improve the program, but also to help draw more investment from business and government.

But if you want to inspire people to participate, you have to show more than numbers; you have to convey the human impact of the work – so people can feel what saving a life means to the families affected.

I remember going to Davos some years back and sitting on a global health panel that was discussing ways to save millions of lives. Millions! Think of the thrill of saving just one person's life – then multiply that by millions. … Yet this was the most boring panel I've ever been on – ever. So boring even I couldn't bear it.

What made that experience especially striking was that I had just come from an event where we were introducing version 13 of some piece of software, and we had people jumping and shouting with excitement. I love getting people excited about software – but why can't we generate even more excitement for saving lives?

You can't get people excited unless you can help them see and feel the impact. And how you do that – is a complex question.

Still, I'm optimistic. Yes, inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new – they can help us make the most of our caring – and that's why the future can be different from the past.

The defining and ongoing innovations of this age – biotechnology, the computer, the Internet – give us a chance we’ve never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from preventable disease.

Sixty years ago, George Marshall came to this commencement and announced a plan to assist the nations of post-war Europe. He said: "I think one difficulty is that the problem is one of such enormous complexity that the very mass of facts presented to the public by press and radio make it exceedingly difficult for the man in the street to reach a clear appraisement of the situation. It is virtually impossible at this distance to grasp at all the real significance of the situation."

Thirty years after Marshall made his address, as my class graduated without me, technology was emerging that would make the world smaller, more open, more visible, less distant.

The emergence of low-cost personal computers gave rise to a powerful network that has transformed opportunities for learning and communicating.

The magical thing about this network is not just that it collapses distance and makes everyone your neighbor. It also dramatically increases the number of brilliant minds we can have working together on the same problem – and that scales up the rate of innovation to a staggering degree.

At the same time, for every person in the world who has access to this technology, five people don't. That means many creative minds are left out of this discussion -- smart people with practical intelligence and relevant experience who don't have the technology to hone their talents or contribute their ideas to the world.

We need as many people as possible to have access to this technology, because these advances are triggering a revolution in what human beings can do for one another. They are making it possible not just for national governments, but for universities, corporations, smaller organizations, and even individuals to see problems, see approaches, and measure the impact of their efforts to address the hunger, poverty, and desperation George Marshall spoke of 60 years ago.

Members of the Harvard Family: Here in the Yard is one of the great collections of intellectual talent in the world.

What for?

There is no question that the faculty, the alumni, the students, and the benefactors of Harvard have used their power to improve the lives of people here and around the world. But can we do more? Can Harvard dedicate its intellect to improving the lives of people who will never even hear its name?

Let me make a request of the deans and the professors – the intellectual leaders here at Harvard: As you hire new faculty, award tenure, review curriculum, and determine degree requirements, please ask yourselves:

Should our best minds be dedicated to solving our biggest problems?

Should Harvard encourage its faculty to take on the world's worst inequities? Should Harvard students learn about the depth of global poverty … the prevalence of world hunger … the scarcity of clean water …the girls kept out of school … the children who die from diseases we can cure?

Should the world's most privileged people learn about the lives of the world's least privileged?

These are not rhetorical questions – you will answer with your policies.

My mother, who was filled with pride the day I was admitted here – never stopped pressing me to do more for others. A few days before my wedding, she hosted a bridal event, at which she read aloud a letter about marriage that she had written to Melinda. My mother was very ill with cancer at the time, but she saw one more opportunity to deliver her message, and at the close of the letter she said: "From those to whom much is given, much is expected."

When you consider what those of us here in this Yard have been given – in talent, privilege, and opportunity – there is almost no limit to what the world has a right to expect from us.

In line with the promise of this age, I want to exhort each of the graduates here to take on an issue – a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it. If you make it the focus of your career, that would be phenomenal. But you don't have to do that to make an impact. For a few hours every week, you can use the growing power of the Internet to get informed, find others with the same interests, see the barriers, and find ways to cut through them.

Don't let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be one of the great experiences of your lives.

You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with very little effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry on longer.

Knowing what you know, how could you not?

And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on what you have done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities … on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity.

Good luck.

Good morning India!

Today on 15th August 20xx India is celebrating its 67th Independence Day, and we Indians are proud to say we have owned our freedom 67 years old back. As we gather here today I take the opportunity to congratulate every student and teacher of this School/college a Happy Independence Day! I also take the opportunity of welcoming you our chief guest for today!

We have assembled here to celebrate our 67th Independence Day. As a citizen of India, I am so proud to talk to you about my mother India. On the night of August 14, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rose to make a maiden speech in New Delhi, “When the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom.” Yes, India became free from the bondage of British rule. Now, India is the largest democratic country in the world. The country’s strength is to find, “Unity in diversity”. But, there are stray incidents that test her secularism but the people of India are ready to sacrifice anything for the cause of unity.

Today we remember the great leaders who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom and prosperity. Dr. dkar gave the longest written constitution to us. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru worked for an industrialized India. Gandhi Ji taught us Ahimsa and Non-violence. Subash Chandra Bose inducted courage in us. Swami Vivekanand gave us spiritual power. Yes, with these contributions; India will be the super power in the coming years. Our former President Abdul Kalam called the children of India to dream to build a strong Nation with aim and perseverance. Indeed!

This is not a word of a single man. It is word of one billionsouls.

I'm happy as I grow up

Good morning, everyone! I’m Zhang Yuting from Grade y,the topic of my speech is “I'm happy as I grow up”.

The happiness of growth is the purest kind of happiness, Sometimes not even need any is a happiness in human life when continuous improvement, It is even the emotional outpouring from the heart. Someone might ask: Is it just happy to grow it is no trouble, and of course there is a growing worry, but "tired" and just "happiness" contrast, is not absolute; sometimes troubles may also be a pleasure.

Through careful study, I know the happiness of mastering knowledge. I know that learning is equivalent to happiness. When you get good grades; When you get a praise from teacher or parents; When you are thinking very hard, and finally know the correct answer to a question When you know a lot of knowledge you almost didn’t know , Do you feel a sense of happiness? right, this is the happiness of learning! we learn in growing life every day, since it can’t escape, then happy to face it! we need to have a class carefully and complete homework carefully , we need to review and preview consciously , you need some proper outdoor sports, to maintain a healthy body. As long as you do the above points, you will be surprised to discover that learning is so happy!

So, my classmates, we must cherish every minute of Time from life, let us "happy to learn, happy to grow up "!

Hello,everyone:

As everyone knows,English is very important today。It has been used everywhere in the world。It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade。 If we can speak English well,we will have more chance to succeed。Because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed。

But for myself,I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it。When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world。When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation。When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words。When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese。。。

I love English,it gives me a colorful dream。I hope I can travel around the world one day。 With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries。I can see many places of great intrests。I dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English。

I also want to use my good English to introduce our great places to the English spoken people,I hope that they can love our country like us。I know, Rome was not built in a day。 I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well。

If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable。 So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too。

I am sure that I will realize my dream one day!

Thank you!

nowadays, watching tv has become an indispensable part of people’s daily life. after working, people will turn on the tv to watch the show they like. it is a good way for people to relax themselves. there are many different kind of tv programs shown every day. some of them are cooking show, some of them are soap operas, my most favorite program is called “the animal world”. the cctv-8 plays it on every saturday night.

born in a big city, i never ever have a chance to the wild animals. but with this amazing tv program, i can see the various living beings from different places. it’s not only broaden our horizon, but also give us a lot of useful knowledge about animals and plants.

as far as i concern, it is a funny as well as valuable tv program. the pictures are not only very beautiful in the show, but also very hard to see. this show open a brand-new door to the world that we do not know. i really enjoy watching it.
